Old Boat Odds and Ends

Automatic/Self Bailer Issues

If you are refitting a new bailer to an old boat you should be aware of the following e-mails on the subject:

===================
I just installed an automatic bailer in my laser. I followed the installation instructions and also laid a bead of RTV around the area before screwing the bailer down. I wiped off the excess RTV and let it cure.  The plug that goes on the end of the rod inside the cockpit wasn't drilled all the way through the rubber. This leaves the rubber stopper loose in the bail hole. With the stopper loose the boat takes on water to what I am guessing is the draft of the boat (approx.. 1 1/2 - to 2"). Does anyone know what I did wrong?

Is the rod that goes through the bailing sleeve supposed to go all the way through the rubber stopper?  Thanks for any help in advance,

I would disagree.  With the "white/beige" stopper (bung), the only way I have been able to get a good seal is by having the brass rod go all the way through.

There are two autobailers out on the market which appear identical except for the bung plug. One is the original from the UK that comes in the blue box. This has a black bung with a hole all the way through the bung, i.e. a Bung-Holey. The other is from Brazil I believe and comes in a plastic bag and has a hole only partially through, i.e. a Partial Bung-Hole. I find the Bung-Holey one works a lot better then the partial bungless hole one so I just reem them out. An ice pick works well for this process..You can tell I'm way into this and its getting late, too much white line fever delivering boats lately...:>)

Be careful with that Ice pick.  I use a variable speed (set on slow) drill and hold the plug with vice grips. it still scares me.  I Need those fingers to tie the clew tie down and signal judge boats.

I recently posted the question of what I did wrong installing an auto-bailer in my laser. Thankyou to everyone for your input. I drilled out the bung so the brass rod sticks through into the cockpit. I took it for a sail last night, and the only water in the boat was from the rain downpour I got caught in.
