John D-E's Hiking Bench

Home ]

Here are some photo's of my hiking bench.  The deck is made from an old solid core door.  The rest is old 2 x 4 's and plywood scraps.   I had all this lying around in my garage so the total cost was almost zero.   It is made to exact laser dimensions.  The only thing not replicated is the side slope on the deck.   Make sure the toe strap fittings are at the right height relative to the plane of the deck . You can do this using a straight edge on the deck and measure down the same distance as you measure on your laser.  Also make sure the toe straps are the correct distance from the inside deck edge.  You should also try to match the exact radius of the deck gunwale so it all feels (hurts!) the same as hiking a real boat.  Just get yourself some strap on hiking pads and away you go!

Measure your hiking moment - when you are hiking on dry land it very easy to slack off and take it easy when you should be
