JDE's suggested ultimate arrangement for new rigging layout based on vang shown below

Now  showing on the Harken home page

This is the design that is advertised as being available to order as of December 2000.  It appears that Harken are aiming this at the general boat market and not just for lasers.   Its advertised as a 15:1 purchase with a 3:1 pulling on a 5:1 purchase.

This is the 2000 revised version of the Harken prototype laser vang.  It has a four to one initial rope purchase (the gray rope) the end of which leads to a three to one red/white rope.  This appears to be a 12:1 overall purchase.

The cleat swivels horizontally to allow adjustment when the boom is out. You can see the rope led through a fixed fairlead in line with the vang before it turns to come through the swivel cleat/fairlead combination.

My first impressions are that it is on the heavy side, but then the loads are quite high.  You can pull one handed and get the boom end down to about 300mm (one foot) from the deck.   Lainie advised that Harken are aware of the weight issue but the first concern is to have something that works.

This was a rather fancy new vang system.

According to a recent May 2, 1999, e-mail from Lainie Pardey systems like this will also be legal if passed by the members.

<< Say, will we have the flexibility to put in swivel cam cleats? >>

Yes, I had to go ask Jeff Martin himself - he's the one who eventually writes the rules into the Handbook.  He said that was the intention, although it's not clearly stated in the proposal.

THAT IS we will be able to add a cam cleat at the bottom of the vang purchase, if we want to add blocks but not lead everything to the deck as shown in the (Laser World) picture.

I don't think the cleats that go onto the plate on the deck will be allowed to be swiveling.  They'd get into each other's way anyway.

This replaces the downhaul cleat.  Its not too clear but those are cam (jaw type) cleats underneath the fairleads.
