This page will contain info about some of D5's famous and up and coming Laser sailors. We'll keep follow their successes (hopefully) as they progress towards the top of the tree.
Mike sailed in D5 for a while before his family moved back to Halifax. Mike was second in the 2000 Canadian trials. See the report here. An interesting amount of controversy abounds!
Sail Melbourne - Jan 2000 - Results - Mike picked up another good result being first NA sailor again, although 7th to 13th was covered by only six points. Andrew Simpson who was 8th, I think, at 1999 Worlds came 24th. Tight racing indeed! Michael Blackburn walked away with another one.
Australian Nationals - Jan 2000 - Mike was 6th in what looks like a return to world class form. It was a close event with plenty of hot shots present. [Gold and Silver Fleet Results]
Sydney International Regatta - Dec 1999 - Mike's first regatta now he is finished with his law school exams for a while. Mike came 11th in the Silver fleet which was won by Nathanial Stoffelsma. No Canadians in the Gold Fleet which was a disappointing result at the Olympic site. [Qualification Series - Races 1-6] [Gold Fleet] [Silver Fleet]
CORK - Mike Simms was second behind Mark Mendelblatt who pretty much dominated the regatta. Both Mike and Mark were far enough ahead on points not to have to sail the last race. A good regatta for Mike after his disappointing European results. [Gold Fleet Results]
Canadian Nationals Mikes Simms was fourth. First Canadian was Chris Cook in third. Event was won by John Torgeson with Andy Lovell second. [Results]
Kiel Week Mike Simms won the bronze fleet. He missed the first few races for some reason and could not qualify for the gold or silver fleets [Results]
Update Nov 25, 1999. Get this! Mike's boat was mistakenly given to Andy Lovell by the guys at SailCoach. Mike had it all rigged the day before the first race and then turned up for the first day's racing only to find his boat had disappeared. Mike ended up with two DNS which put paid to his Gold Fleet chances. Andy Lovell's boat was tucked away on the SailCoach trailer all the time.....Tuborg Spring Regatta Copenhagen [All Results] Mike Simms 44th out of 90, 3rd Canadian
