There are several perpetual trophies that ILCA District 5 Members can aspire to win. Barry Tee has rounded them up over the last few months so they can go out on the circuit again. Some date back as far as 1972 and with age have acquired some "character" along the way. Some trophies are in need of refurbishment and we will have a go at "renewing" them this winter. ILCA N A Region and District 5 policy is that they are only awarded to paid up ILCA members. The perpetual trophies are:
District 5 Championship - Ship's barometer
Western Canadian Laser Championship - Ship's bell
Alberta Laser Championship - Ship's Lantern
Alberta Laser Gold Cup - Plaque with etching of a tall ship
Southern Alberta Laser Championship - Wooden ship's wheel
From a review of the old D5 files, it appears that the manner in which the Trophies are attached to events has varied. The Ships Lantern used to be awarded at the Canarctic games, (whatever that was-anybody know?).
In 1999 we started a new Championship, the District 5 Grand Prix. The best three results of five larger lake regattas in Saskatchewan (2) and Alberta (3) counts. In case of a tie on points, we look to see which of the two skippers beat each more often in the Grand Prix regattas they both sailed in. .

The Trophy is a round six inch brass barometer/thermometer mounted an a board with plaques showing the first three each year. It was first awarded in 1984. We have no record of who presented it or if there was a trophy prior to 1984. We also are looking for results in that era. If you have any results archived from those days please let us know. From the D5 files it appears that in the "old days" the District 5 Championship used to be a best two of three regattas, but it is now a single regatta event. Attached to the event are 20 North American Grand Prix points.
Masters winners are shown here.

The District 5 Masters Championship is held as as a subset of the District 5 Championships. Positions of each Master competitor are extracted as a subset of the District 5 Championship results, and then handicapped according to Laser Master rules. Each younger age group has a handicap of one place over the next age group. The results over the last two years are shown below, with the overall winner's name being highlighted. There is no separate trophy for this event.

This trophy is a Ship's bell and was donated by "Western Laser Dealers" and first awarded in 1972. In 1999 it tagged along with the CYA's SailWest event which rotates between the prairie provinces. From the names of the winners of the trophy it seems that at one time it could have been to B.C. as well. However, from at least 1994 onwards it was attached to the Alberta Provincial Regatta. (See below about the Lantern trophy going AWOL which may account for the switching of trophies between events.) Any comments anyone?

The Trophy is a Brass Lantern donated by J. Anderson and J. Pryor. First awarded in 1972. The trophy was "rescued" in 1999 after it was apparently tucked away in part of the ASA offices. When and how it got there nobody knows. Currently it is awarded to the winner of the Alberta Provincial Regatta. The trophy currently has plaques from 1972 through 1989. We will update the trophy for the missing years from the D5 and ASA records and award it to the 1999 winner.

The Alberta Laser Gold Cup, according to the inscription, is "Presented to the Alberta Skipper with the best overall seasons performance in Provincial Competition." The trophy was first awarded in 1979 and currently lists the winners through 1989. Again we will try to find the list of winners and update the Trophy accordingly. In the past the rules have changed. In 1996 it was for the best 5 of 8 regattas. Earlier it was based on the best 6 of 9 and included such events as the Lac St. Anne Open and the Peyto Mile High. Currently its for the best 4 of 8 regattas.

The Trophy is a six spoked wooden ships wheel. It was donated by Laser Sailcraft in 1972. The trophy contains the names of the winners between 1972 and 1994. After that we are missing the results until this year. This year the trophy goes to Stefan Dalberg for his victory for the Newell S. C. Prairie (no) Wind Regatta.
